Full Time Job

Looking for a job has been a full time job. Between filling out on-line applications, submitting resumes and taking tests I am actually busy. I have been dutifully sitting at my computer since 7:00a this morning. I took a short break to take a shower (much needed) and take Mojo for a short walk (much appreciated). I am back at my desk and a bit distracted by Sprints new fun site Sprint Waitless. Now I know how to soothe a crying baby and quickly peel an egg. Excuse me while I go out to the parking lot and practice turbo parking.

The Biggest Loser

No, today's title is not indicative of my current unemployed status although being unemployed is starting to wear me thin. Today's title is about the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser". Much to our surprise, TBL Campus is none other than California State University of Channel Islands. What significance does this have to our lives? Well, we live adjacent to the CSUCI campus. When I say adjacent I really mean on campus. We are a small bedroom community nestled in the Santa Monica mountains attached to the CSUCI campus. Apparently not small enough because we had no idea TBL was being filmed only a short walk from our front door!

In a previous life the CSUCI campus was the home of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Built in the 1930's the campus buildings are Spanish Revival in style. It is rumored the Eagles song "Hotel California" was written about CSMH. Jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker was a "resident" of CSMH while detoxing from Heroin. He wrote "Relaxin' in Camarillo" as an ode to his stay. A well located on campus was used in the movie "The Ring". And my favorite fact, it is rumored the campus is haunted ... boo!

Surprisingly our community has a very low population of college students. Most of our neighbors are professionals, police officers, military personnel and faculty. Oh, I forgot to mention our animal neighbors; coyotes, deer, birds, mountain lions, lizards and bunny rabbits.

The mountain lion is the newest member of the community, albeit they were here before us, and several sightings have been reported. I believe Mojo and I had a brush with the mountain lion but I can't be certain. During our morning walk last week we came upon a bush that was growling at us. At the time I didn't know of the mountain lion sightings so I assumed it was a coyote. Sure, a coyote is scary but to think it may have been a mountain lion is totally scary!!!! In retrospect it makes sense that a large animal was on the prowl. Recently I have been complaining about the large poops left on the walking trail. Of course I assumed the poop was left by an inconsiderate dog owner but I suppose the mass amounts of fur in the poop should have been a tip off.

Asya or Aja

In my recent job search I employed the help of an employment agency. When I call in to this agency I have to denote which "Asia" I am. I am Asya, with a "y" not with a "j". Growing up I never had this problem and many times my name is what made me memorable, sadly. After 31 years I am no longer unique. I am just another "Asia" in the system. I guess I need to find a new way to be unique and memorable.

My job search is slow moving but I hope that means my next job will be the best ever! Today I am onto round #3 of interviews with a company in Westlake Village. The first was good and the second was intense with lots of tests. Round #3 I will meet with select team members I would be working with at this position. I also received notice my application was accepted by County of Ventura and they would like me to come in for a 2.5 hour written exam on the 20th. Fingers crossed I am employed by October.

Wicked Fun

We had wicked fun this Labor Day weekend. Sunday night we joined Mania and Reza for some theatrics at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. We saw "Wicked". If you have not watched "Wicked" then I highly suggest you do; just don't attend when it is 100+ degrees outside. The theater was sold out and the a/c wasn't able to accommodate all of those hot bodies. We had a great time and the musical was amazing. The costumes were marvelous. The acting was superb. The songs were catchy. Forewarning: Wicked memorabilia is expensive! We paid $42 for a t-shirt ... crazy!

I would also recommend you read "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. The story line is so much more than meets the eye. It is political. It is all about perceptions.
